Satyajit Ray began his career by adapting the Pather Panchali novel trilogy. As a magazine illustrator, Ray supervised the book series and had the idea of developing a film from it – which was later followed by two more. The story revolves around the young Apu and his family, who try to free themselves from poverty. For everyone involved in the film, it was the first experiences on a film shoot.
